Madrid approves the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda Strategy for the city

Summary

The SDG Localization Strategy is an integrated vision of the main transformations to be carried out in the city in the next decade. It is a key milestone, it pays special attention to the multidimensional nature of sustainable development and the interrelationships between the different objectives. The Governing Board of the Madrid City Council approved it by the end of March.

Coordinated by the Delegate Area of Internationalization and Cooperation, it has had the contributions of all areas of Government and various entities of the city. It has 104 local goals and contemplates the following 6 leverage policies:

  • Efficient and transparent institutions.
  • Climate neutrality, mobility and air quality.
  • Green city, responsible consumption and circular economy.
  • Social protection and equality.
  • City to enjoy.
  • Innovation and inclusive and sustainable economy.

Among the lines of action for which specific goals are set for 2030, the following can be highlighted:

  • Fight against poverty and the exclusion of people.
  • Attend to the most vulnerable groups (the elderly, children, etc.).
  • Promote gender equality and end discrimination based on sex.
  • Improve air quality and the city's decarbonization process.
  • Promote sustainable mobility.
  • Promote responsible consumption, reduction and recycling of waste.
  • Increase open information, transparency and the digitization process of the Madrid City Council Administration.
  • Protect the cultural heritage of the city.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Guarantee a safe city.
  • Promote entrepreneurship, innovation and research to generate fair and quality employment.

In the area of governance, there have been two fundamental spaces involved in the approval and monitoring process of this Strategy. On one hand, the Transversal Group of International Action, in which all areas of Government, autonomous bodies and municipal companies have actively participated and, on the other, the Madrid Solidaria Forum, a space in which multiple actors and entities of the city, external to the City Council, have made observations and contributions to the strategy. Specifically, 16 entities have submitted a total of 96 proposals or contributions, of which approximately 50% have been incorporated into the final document, including new specific goals and indicators in the final Strategy.

Each of the 104 specific goals of the city has one or more monitoring indicators and each of these indicators, with a base value from the year 2015 (or failing that, the next year with available information) and a target value by 2030 (or, failing that, the trend sought), which will make it possible to quantify, through annual monitoring reports, the evolution and progress in the Strategy and in the Sustainable Development Goals between now and 2030.
