Summary

The district Ezbet El-Nasr suffers from a lack of infrastructure & services and poor housing conditions. Over time, the status of the area and its inhabitants has gradually deteriorated on a socio-economic and physical level. This has lead to the district being labelled as being among the group of under-served communities. They have a high density population as well as bad air quality, which has increased the prevalence of respiratory diseases, particularly among children.

Background and Objective

Polluted Air which in turn, increased the prevalence of respiratory diseases. Lake access to appropriate energy saving technologies due to the high prices compared with the low income Lack of community awareness of the negative impacts of climate change and energy conservation technologies. Actions and Implementation

Through a comprehensive awareness campaign, the community provided with the opportunity to provide input and ideas into the implementation cycle. Furthermore, the training of facilitators and young volunteers from the community allow active involvement of community members and further allowed for resolution of any conflicts occur during the implementation. Beneficiaries of the program are also personally in charge of planting their roofs and reducing their energy consumption. Through on-going contact with them. by the end of the project the beneficiaries were to will to: - Identify problems during implementation; enhance project performance. - Promote the identification and dissemination of lessons learned by participants themselves.

Outcomes and Impacts

Financial sustainability: - The training programs of the LDC and NGO on proposal writing will enable them to write a good proposal to generate funding from other donors to sustain the project achievements. - The project provided beneficiaries with market information on where these raw materials can be purchased, while also providing beneficiaries with recycling methods which can be used to replace the expensive wood and plastic basins through more affordable means. Institutional sustainability - Well trained volunteers who will be able to manage small-scale projects, as well as to train others in order to increase the number of beneficiaries. - Community based participatory approaches and engagement of key stakeholders will contribute to project sustainability. Policy level sustainability: - Strong governmental support to the issues addressed by the project (youth involvement, woman empowerment, improve sustainable livelihood and living conditions, community resilience and climate change adaptation) as it comes on the first state priority's issues. Environmental sustainably - The action aims at improving the social, health and environmental conditions by reducing GHG emissions, by relying on renewable energy. - The awareness program significantly contributed to change the behaviour of the target groups into positive attitudes that’ll preserve the environment, to achieve environmental sustainability

Gender and Social Inclusivity

The project established an Environment Information System to gather and keep data/information about the Project activities, achievements, lessons learned, best practices and success stories • These information being disseminated on a monthly basis at decision making, stakeholders, NGOs and donor levels. Also, the Project activities, achievements, lessons learned, best practices and success stories will be available via the project’s Website and the social media Channels. • A closing conference will be an important mechanism for the dissemination of the project activities, achievements, lessons learned, best practices and success stories to respective governmental institutions/authorities, donors and the Media. •Printed materials and educational guide will spread the idea among the largest number of beneficiaries even beyond the life cycle of the project.

Conclusion

The project is consistent with the state national priorities and concerned ministries, Ministry of Urban Renewal and Informal Settlements which aims to upgrade the urban environment, improve infrastructure facilities, and quality of life and public health The project is also matching with the plans of the Ministry of Electricity in energy efficiency to rationalize the energy conception and provide clean alternative sources of power generation relying on renewables. Furthermore it's in the same line with the endeavours of the Ministry of Environment to reduce the negative impacts of climate change and to provide the necessary measures to increase communities’ resilience. This project also comes to confirm the President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi initiative in providing efficient light saving bulbs and means of renewable energy to reduce the energy crisis at the state level as well as it is consistent with Egypt vision 2050 to Initiative to develop slums .
