Cities for Girls, Cities for All

Cities for Girls, Cities for All

Summary

Urban development that integrates a gender equality lens as an entry point for analysis and as a guidance for interventions, is more likely to result in sustainable urbanization, recent research shows. A focus on gender equality sets urban planning on course to become more inclusive and functional, and ultimately more relevant for all.

Her City was initiated to promote girls’ and women’s participation in urban planning and design processes, to create sustainable and inclusive cities. Involving girls in urban development will make the city better for everyone. The digital toolbox is gathering tools and methods to setup participatory processes, facilitating the dialogue between citizens and professionals.

The publication Cities for Girls, Cities for All is the report from the Vinnova Innovation for Gender Equality Project implemented jointly by UN-Habitat and the Swedish independent think tank Global Utmaning. It show cases the results of the Her City toolbox as well as the implementation of our partnership projects worldwide. The report also provides guidelines for gender and intersectional sensitive participatory planning, design and implementation to support a variety of urban actors in building cities for all, together with girls and young women.
